Irish Permanent planned to evict a 36-year-old single mother of two from her £100,000 home today because she owes it £6,700 in arrears, a court has been told.

Yesterday the Circuit Court president, Mr Justice Smyth, described Ms Niamh O'Donnell's effort to save the family home as "an eminently reasonable proposal" and ordered that the planned eviction be deferred.

Mr Michael Byrne, counsel for Ms O'Donnell, of Whitechurch Park, Ballyboden, Dublin, said an attempt by her solicitor to stave off the sheriff had been rejected by the building society. He said Mr Martin Moran, of Finbar Cahill and Co, had written to the society with an offer from Ms O'Donnell to clear off the arrears within a period of two months beginning with a lump sum of £1,000 immediately, a further £2,000 within a month and the balance to follow.

He said the property was worth about £100,000, and Ms O'Donnell's arrears stood at approximately £6,700.
