A motorcyclist who suffered serious injuries following a collision with a car which was allegedly uninsured and not roadworthy has settled his High Court action for €775,000 damages.

The settlement was made without admission of liability.

The court was told Glen Broughan suffers from continuous pain, has little or no power in the right side of his body, can only walk very short distances and requires the use of a wheelchair as a result of the injuries.

Mr Broughan (34), a mechanic, Mangan Road, Hollyfort, Gorey, Co Wexford, had sued the driver of the car Christopher Walsh of Ballyday, Gorey, Co Wexford and the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland for damages over the collision on the Coolgreany to Arklow Road on June 19th 2003.

Yesterday, on the third day of the action, Barry Hickson SC, for Mr Broughan, told Mr Justice Brian McGovern the action had been settled on the basis of an order for €775,000 plus costs being made against the MIBI.

In his action, Mr Broughan claimed Mr Walsh was driving the car on the wrong side of the road when the collision occurred and had crossed over a continuous white line on the road. It was also alleged the car was not roadworthy.

The defendants denied liability and alleged contributory negligence by Mr Broughan. It was alleged the accident did not occur on Mr Broughan’s side of the road and that Mr Broughan was travelling at speed.
