A husband and wife were in court yesterday following the discovery of pipe-bombs last week in a loyalist area on the outskirts of Belfast.

Mr Darren Purdy (30), a gardener, and his wife, Linda (33), of Carn Crescent, New Mossley, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, faced three charges when they appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court.

They were charged with possessing pipe-bombs, a revolver and ammunition with intent to endanger life and having a list of names of former republican prisoners.

A detective said Mr Purdy made no reply to the pipebombs charge. In relation to the firearms, he said: "I was forced to hold that stuff." The couple were remanded in custody.
