MEATH COUNTY Council is to carry out “a full, independent investigation” into the handling of money received by its planning department.

In a brief statement yesterday, the county council said it would not comment further on the matter, but the decision by county manager Tom Dowling to set up an inquiry followed “comments made at the council meeting” on Monday.

At that meeting, Mr Dowling had said he had “every confidence” in the council’s planning department and denied any wrongdoing by the council.

This followed a heated debate after he was asked if anybody was benefiting from the council accepting post-dated cheques in relation to planning.

The matter of whether the council had not cashed cheques made out to it within a period of time was raised by Fine Gael councillor Sirena Campbell.
