The Cork twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf, who were born conjoined, are stable in intensive care and are making progress daily, a hospital update said today.

The boys were separated during 14 hours of surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London earlier this month.

In a statement, the hospital said the surgical team “had always anticipated a substantial period of recovery from this major surgery”.

“They are broadly where the medical team expected them to be at this point.”

Mother of the twins Angie Benhaffaf said: “The past two weeks have been extremely tough for our ‘little fighters’ and for me, Az (her husband) and the girls.

“Even though the sun has shone since their separation, we’ve also had dark clouds that hovered over their little cots in intensive care and brought difficult days for them both.

“Both Hassan and Hussein have been through so much. We know there is still a long journey ahead. As parents we sometimes feel helpless and we watch anxiously what our precious twins are going through everyday.”

Ms Behaffaf said support from the public was helping the family to get through and bundles of post were being received twice a day for the boys at the hospital.

Cork-born surgeon Edward Kiely carried out the operation along with a team of up to 30 doctors.

The twins were born last December at University College Hospital in London. They were joined at the chest but did not share vital organs.
