Two Cork men who attacked one woman then sexually assaulted and robbed another on the same night in Cork city have been sentenced to 10 years and nine years in jail respectively, with one year suspended on each term.

Judge Patrick Moran said he had to try to ensure such behaviour was not repeated as he jailed Colin O’Sullivan (20), Highfield Crescent, Kanturk, and Adam Heneghan (19), Upper Dromore, Dromahane, for the two attacks.

Judge Moran had earlier described the two as behaving like “blackguards” on the night.

The court heard they had followed a Polish woman (30) as she walked home alone after work before attacking her outside the Mercy Hospital. Heneghan hit her on the head with a bottle but a hospital security man came to her assistance.

The men then followed another woman (33). O’Sullivan approached her and lured her into church grounds. Heneghan hit her on the head with a bottle and shouted to get her on the ground. He held her down as O’Sullivan pulled down her underwear. The assault stopped when they saw the woman was trying to use her mobile phone to ring 999.

Judge Moran also ordered that their names be placed on the sex offenders register.
