A special committee in Cobh is seeking €2 million for commemorative events to mark the sinking of the Titanic next year.

A special committee in Cobh is seeking €2 million for commemorative events to mark the sinking of the Titanic next year.

The plans include a memorial garden to contain two legacy projects, a glass wall depicting the Titanic at anchor in Cork Harbour and a stone from the garden of a house once owned by Bruce Ismay, former chairman of the White Star line.

The committee, set up two years ago, plans to kick-off the year-long tribute with a lavish black tie dinner to replicate the entertainment laid on for first-class passengers aboard the liner. Plans include a revamp of the pier – where passengers departed Cobh and were ferried to the Titanic – at an estimated cost of €300,000. “We are . . . trying to raise funds . . . we are very optimistic about what we can achieve next year,” Cobh mayor Jim Quinlan said.
