We are disappointed when we find that these are smaller than the others. The crunchy, nutty topping on the chocolate-drizzled ice cream makes things better, although the makers are a bit stingy with the chocolate. Thankfully the tasty waffle cone is chocolate-lined, but we soon reach the end of that. This feels like a small treat – we like our cones more generously proportioned. The best part is the chocolate at the end of the cone. Obviously.

Verdict: You might need more than just one Cornetto.

KITKAT CONES

Tesco

When we lift the plastic lid off the KitKat cone and unwrap the foil, we are pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a swirl of soft vanilla ice cream blended with chocolate ice cream, topped with chocolate sauce. The frozen KitKat sticking up in the centre holds its taste well despite being frozen, and the generous finger reaches down to the waffle cone. It is not chocolate-lined but it doesn’t need to be, because the whipped chocolate and vanilla ice cream fill the cone right down to the very familiar-tasting chocolate at the end.

Verdict: Well worth a break.

TESCO VANILLA & CHOCOLATE
€1.29 for 4x100ml, €0.32 per cone

The vanilla ice cream is very nicely peaked under the paper lid, and it looks very good. The chocolate doesn't have huge flavour but the ice cream tastes great. The chocolate-lined waffle cone is just as good as the Cornetto and has even more chocolate at the end. We feel like the great defector as we polish off this good-value cone. It might not be the best, but it is the best value.

Verdict: If it walks like a Cornetto . . .

OREO
€1.29 for 4x100ml, €1.25 per cone

This all-American treat (made in Lancashire) looks impressive, its thick, milky ice cream generously topped with soft Oreo cookie pieces that look irresistible. The cookie pieces are mixed with vanilla ice cream, and fill the sickly sweet chocolate-flavoured cone. The end is crammed full of rich, dark chocolate that is a little too filling. It looks great, tastes good but is as heavy as the price tag.

Verdict: Too heavy and too dear.
