Congolese government troops have retaken control of Bukavu from dissident soldiers without a fight.
UN spokesman Mr Sebastian Lapierre said rebel leader Colonel Jules Mutebutsi and his men have fled.
"Mutebutsi's soldiers have run away as the government troops are moving back in. People are playing drums. Mutebutsi is no where to be seen," Mr Lapierre said by telephone from Bukavu.
Mutebutsi and his 300 fighters were one of two groups of renegade soldiers who took control of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo town last Wednesday.
