Rep Gary Condit, under fire for his relationship with a missing intern, made a rare public appearance on Capitol Hill last night as police disclosed they had turned over to the FBI the results of a privately administered polygraph taken by Mr Condit.

Assistant Police Chief Terrance Gainer said police were awaiting the FBI analysis of the lie detector test taken last week but still wanted to pose their own questions to the 53-year-old Mr Condit.

"Just got the polygraph yesterday. It's been sent to the FBI. We're going to examine that," Mr Gainer said in an interview on CNN.

"We have some questions in some areas we'd like to follow up on and I intend to be talking with his attorney to see if we can work that out," the police official said.

The Democratic lawmaker's public appearance came as police searched for a second day for signs of the missing woman, Chandra Levy, in a wooded Washington park. Mr Condit had no comment as he walked to a hearing of the House Agriculture Committee, of which he is a member.

His only words when confronted by cameras and reporters were "Excuse me" as he made his way through to the hearing.

Reporters have also staked out his Washington apartment, which was searched last week by police hunting for Ms Levy, who was last seen on April 30.

He has denied through a lawyer that he has any information about the disappearance of Ms Levy, saying only that he was friends with the 24-year-old, who came from his California district and was an intern at the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Outside Mr Condit's office in Modesto, California, several dozen demonstrators gathered to demand he step down.

"Resign right now. We don't want you in there anymore. You don't deserve to represent the people of Congressional District No 18," said Sandra Duffy, one of the mostly Republican and independent protesters.

Mr Condit, who has represented the Central Valley district for more than a decade and was re-elected last year with 67 per cent of the vote, responded with a statement by his chief of staff Mike Lynch, saying the protest was politically motivated.

"Congressman Condit believes the disappearance of Chandra Levy and the ongoing police investigation should not be exploited by partisan special interest groups which have their own political agenda," he said.
