More than 3,500 staff of the Mid Western Health Board, who were due to get paid yesterday, did not have the money transferred into their bank accounts because of a computer glitch.

Their concerns were brought to the attention of the Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Ms Harney, at a Dáil committee meeting yesterday by Fine Gael's deputy spokesman on health, Mr Dan Neville.

A total of 3,596 staff were affected and the health board, in a statement, said "a systems error" had resulted in staff not having funds transferred into their bank accounts. The board said staff with accounts in the main banks should find their salaries in their accounts early tomorrow and anyone who has a building society account will receive the money on Monday.

"Alternative arrangements are being made to issue interim payments by cheque to staff with an urgent need for payment," it said.
