The RTE switchboard was said to have been flooded with complaints last night over an interview with the presidential candidate, Dana, Ms Rosemary Scallon, on the Tonight with Vincent Browne radio programme.

Staff at RTE said dozens of listeners registered their disapproval at the treatment of Dana on the show.

A Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Councillor, Mr Richard Greene (Ind), said Dana was "treated with absolute contempt. None of the other candidates are being subjected to the same sort of abuse."

On the programme last night, Dana was repeatedly asked for her views on issues such as abortion and the decriminalisation of homosexuality.

The candidate claimed she was "being pilloried" for her religious beliefs. She asked why she couldn't be questioned about "issues that matter to this country as a whole" like homelessness and problems facing the elderly.
