Divers opened the 17th Commonwealth Games this morning, with the women's 1-metre springboard starting competition at the high-tech Manchester Aquatics Centre hours before the official opening ceremony.

Australian Rebecca Gilmore was the first competitor up, performing a forward dive with two-and-a-half somersaults. But it was Canadian Emilie Heymans who led after the first of five preliminary dives.

Gold was also on offer in the men's 1m springboard, with both men and women competing in preliminaries, semi-finals and finals.

Divers didn't seem to mind that the first of their three Games events - which also include 3-metre springboard and 10-metre platform - were the stealth event of the opening day, when attention was focused on the evening's opening ceremony.
