Washington - The House Judiciary Committee considering the impeachment of President Clinton yesterday offered the White House two days to present its defence and said it would not be deterred from holding an impeachment vote this week.

In a letter to the White House released to reporters, the committee's chief-of-staff said the Clinton defence team could have 30 hours - from 9 a.m. to midnight Tuesday and Wednesday - to make its case. The White House had requested up to four days. A White House spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

The letter said the committee was determined to wrap up the impeachment case this year and planned to start the impeachment debate by Thursday night.
