For some it's the gym, for others the Nutron diet, but for wine buffs spring self-improvement means signing up for a course that will help unravel the mysteries of what you most enjoy drinking and why. With five times more people embarking on wine education now than just five years ago, classes with glasses are clearly the place to be.

Wine merchants all over the country are in on the act, but the Wine Development Board of Ireland has a countrywide network of courses, both for casual imbibers and for wine careerists intent on formal qualifications. This spring it plans to run 50, in 24 locations around Ireland.
