A landslide destroyed 25 village houses in the southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou today and 65 villagers are missing, Xinhua news agency said.

Police and soldiers are searching for survivors after the landslide, which happened early in the morning in Nayong county.

"The landslide destroyed 25 houses in which an estimated 108 people were sleeping," Xinhua said, adding that 31 people had managed to escape and 12 had been rescued.

Local government officials in Nayong said the cause of the disaster was under investigation.
