China slapped a ban on some animal imports from Gabon and said passengers from the virus-stricken African state will be subject to extra scrutiny, the official China Dailynewspaper said today.

The death toll from an Ebola virus outbreak in the central African countries of Gabon and Republic of Congo has risen to 20, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said yesterday.

In an official notice, China's national quarantine authority said it would not allow apes, such as chimpanzees and gorillas, or their products to enter China, the newspaper said.

Apes or products made from apes shipped to China from Gabon would be returned or destroyed and suspect passengers may be isolated for check-ups, it said.
