CHINA: Twelve more Chinese deaths from the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) epidemic were reported yesterday as the World Health Organisation called on travellers to stay away from southern China, the area hardest hit by the outbreak.

Suspected cases of SARS were also reported across China in areas previously believed unaffected.

The WHO said that the SARS death toll in China now stood at 46. A total of 78 people are believed to have died worldwide.

The WHO statement said that China's total of reported SARS cases had now reached 1,190. According to the latest WHO figures, more that 2,000 people have been infected in 22 countries.
