Rangers' hopes of catching leaders Celtic to retain the championship took a body blow when they suffered their first league defeat by Dunfermline in 30 years.

An early goal from Stevie Crawford had put the home side ahead, but victory was sealed by a bizarre own goal with eight minutes remaining by Paolo Vanoli, that left the visitors trailing by eight points in the championship race.

Rangers made a change in the 72nd minute when Shota Arveladze replaced Mols. The newcomer pepped up his team and sent a great ball to send Lovenkrands through although that resulted only in a corner.

An equally impressive pass set Malcolm up for a clear chance but the midfielder ended up slipping at the crucial moment and failed to hit the target.

The home side made a change in 77th minute when Brewster was replaced by Noel Hunt.

Arveladze then saw a shot deflected inches wide following a corner from Vanoli.

But in the 82nd minute the Italian unwittingly sealed his side's fate with a bizarre own goal. Initially he had been the subject of a penalty appeal for handball but when it became apparent that play was continuing the left-back inexplicably then passed the ball past his own goalkeeper and into the net to the delight of the home fans.
