Fears over the safety four Cavan brother believed to have been in the World Trade Centre when it collapsed two weeks ago have ended when they were located in New York today.

According to Sinn Fein’s Mr Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin the four men’s family have been greatly relieved to hear they have been found alive. He said the young men had sustained multiple injuries in the World Trade Centre atrocity on September 11th.

It has been reported they were found alive in one of New York’s main hospitals.

Mr Ó Caoláin said a number of families from Co Cavan had connected him over their concerns about the safety of relatives after the US attacks.

The families had been reluctant to go through official channels and insisted on maintaining their anonymity because their relatives in New York were undocumented or classified as 'illegals' at the time of the attacks.

Reiterating his call for the US administration to declare immunity for such people, he said the Government should consider that the Cavan cases may well be replicated elsewhere in Ireland.

Mr Ó Caoláin said he has written to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Brian Cowen, the US Ambassador, Mr Richard Egan, and the Department of Foreign Affairs over the matter.

"I have again encouraged people right across the board to utilise the existing emergency official network and have assured people of the confidential nature of the service offered by the Irish Consulate General in New York," he said.
