A woman whose son was born dead at a Cork hospital allegedly as a consequence of blood type incompatibility has settled her High Court action for €100,000.

Orla McCarthy (45), Rockcliffe Village, Blackrock Road, Cork, had sued a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Pillany Pillay, who has a practice at Infirmary Road, Cork, and Pillay’s General Hospital Ltd, trading as City General Hospital, of the same address, arising out of the stillbirth of her son, Dylan, on July 25th, 1992.

The settlement, approved yesterday by Mr Justice Vivian Lavan, was made without admission of liability.

The court was told there was a third party issue in the case involving a hospital in New York which is being sued by the defendants over allegedly providing incorrect information on Ms McCarthy’s blood group.
