Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier welcomed the news Jamie Carragher and Chris Kirkland had signed new contracts, and revealed there could soon be more players following suit.

Goalkeeper Kirkland, 22 and tipped as a future England regular, has committed his long-term future to the Anfield club by agreeing a new deal which will take him through to 2009.

England defender Carragher, 25, is currently on the mend following a broken leg suffered in a collision with Lucas Neill at Blackburn in September, and has extended his stay until 2007.

Houllier told the club's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: "It shows that the club is not only looking at the future, but the present.

"We have always said we would give a new contract to Carra and this is a club that cares about its players. It's a club also that always keeps its promise and I'm pleased that we've managed to sign both of them for the future."

The Liverpool manager added: "We want more success here and there will be probably be some more new signings soon."
