Car breaks NI checkpoint, injures police

Two police officers have been injured after a car drove through a checkpoint in Lisburn today.

Two police officers have been injured after a car drove through a checkpoint in Lisburn today.

At around 12.30pm police tried to flag down a black Vauxhall Vectra car on the Bell Steel road during a routine stop.

The driver refused to stop and struck one of the officers as he drove on. The officer sustained a wrist injury.

Another officer then attempted to open the car door, but the driver took off again. The officer's arm was trapped in the door and he was dragged along the ground for around 15 metres. He suffered minor injuries.

The car was stopped on the Stewartstown Road, and the driver, in his late 40s, was arrested. A passenger had fled the scene.

Two children, believed to be under 10, were in the car at the time. Neither was injured.
