A 61-year-old businessman, Denis Ward, The Russian Village, Kilquade, Co Wicklow, was sentenced to six months in prison yesterday for possessing clenbuterol, also known as angel dust, for sale in 1992.

He was charged with keeping the clenbuterol for sale at Tymonville, Tallaght, and with possessing clenbuterol at a warehouse in New Road, Dublin, on March 30th, 1992.

At a sitting of Tallaght District Court yesterday, Judge Delap fined the defendant £1,000 on each of the two charges and sentenced him to six months in prison for keeping the drug for sale at Tymonville.

The court was told the charges arose from a joint Department of Agriculture investigation with gardai which uncovered £230,000 worth of the animal growth-promoting hormone.
