A critically ill woman is awaiting a High Court decision in Britain on whether she can seek assisted suicide in Switzerland.

The woman, who cannot be named, suffers from the progressive degenerative brain disease cerebeallar ataxia and wants her family to take her to Switzerland, where she can legally end her life. She is unable to travel alone.

The High Court case was brought by a local council caring for the woman, which feared it may be liable if it allowed her to leave the country.

Currently in Britain, assisting a suicide carries a prison sentence of up 14 years. If successful, the case may prompt change in Britain's euthanasia laws.
