The British Government is planning to cut the salaries to Assembly members by half during the interim period until the new elections.
If it goes ahead it would represent a further cut in the money paid to politicians since the government suspended the Assembly last year, according to a BBC Online report this morning.
The Northern Ireland Office says details of the pay cut are still under discussion, but it is understood that Assembly members will probably be offered half their original £42,500 wage.
This new salary of about £21,000 is intended to be a temporary arrangement, pending future elections.
