There was severe traffic disruption on the N7 dual carriageway yesterday morning with drivers facing two-hour tailbacks stretching all the way back to the turn-off for Naas.

The traffic jam was caused as a result of works being carried out on the Rathcoole overpass bridge.

As the evening rush hour approached reports suggested the traffic was not as heavy as predicted, with many drivers appearing to have avoided the blackspot.

One motorist, Ms Sharon Healy, from Laurelwood, Kilcullen, said she would have to leave an hour early to get to work in time this morning.

"Its was just madness. Why do they have to do that kind of work this time of year? It's just so frustrating. It's bad enough having to face the normal heavy traffic as it is without this," she said.

The roadworks have resulted in the southbound lane being closed, with traffic diverted into the northbound lane. Traffic moving north is also being diverted into two lanes.

The NRA said the works had to be carried out now and it has apologised for the delays caused. From today, there will be two lanes open to help ease the congestion.

Yesterday evening it seemed many commuters had abandoned the N7 in favour of other routes. AA Roadwatch had warned motorists to avoid the road if possible over the next six weeks.
