Fianna Fáil councillors on Dublin City Council have selected Mr Royston Brady to be the party's candidate for the position of Lord Mayor of Dublin.

The Mayoral election is due to take place next month.

Whoever is chosen as the Fianna Fáil candidate is likely to become the next Lord Mayor, due to a voting pact agreed between Fianna Fáil and Labour councillors.

Three candidates sought the job in a contest that was decided by a vote by the party's 20 councillors tonight.

They other two candidates were Ms Mary Mooney and Ms Deirdre Heney.

Mr Brady is a long-time activist in the constituency network of the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, in Drumcondra.

It was thought before the general election last year that Mr Brady would stand for the Dáil in Dublin Central. However, the outgoing TD, Mr Dermot Fitzpatrrick, was selected.
