The three-year-old boy, who died at the weekend after being struck by a car in the seaside village of Rosses Point, Co Sligo, was named yesterday as Evan Tracey, Rathedmond estate, Sligo.

The accident happened on the main Sligo/Rosses Point road outside Austie's bar and restaurant, a landmark in the village.

Witnesses were shocked as the driver of the car tried in vain to avoid the little boy. The accident happened at about 5pm on Sunday in the centre of the seaside village which was packed because of the fine weather.

The child was rushed to Sligo hospital five miles from the scene but was pronounced dead on arrival.
