A four-year-old boy who was killed when he ran on to a road in Kerry at the weekend had just arrived from England for a holiday in the area.

He was named yesterday as Rio Singh Ranjaha Potiwan, the youngest of four children in a family from Middlesbrough. He died at Tralee General Hospital on Sunday evening after being hit by a car at Dromin, about one mile from Listowel.

The Singh family, who have relations in the area, had arrived at their holiday home this weekend.

Meanwhile a man killed in another road accident in Kerry early yesterday has been named as Mr John Paul O'Brien of Balloonagh Estate, Tralee.

Mr O'Brien (24), died when the Opel Astra he was driving was in collision with a taxi. He had been attending the Puck Fair festival in Killorglin.

The accident occurred at about 3.25 a.m. on a straight stretch of road two miles outside Killorglin on the main Killorglin to Killarney road.

Mr O'Brien was alone in the car and died at the scene.The driver of the taxi suffered minor injuries. Gardaí in Killorglin (066-976 1113) have appealed for witnesses.

Twelve people have been killed on the Kerry roads so far this year, compared to eight fatalities during all of last year.
