A teenager suffering from cancer died early on Saturday morning after he attended a tribute soccer match for him in Dalymount Park in Dublin on Friday.

Michael McKiernan (16) was a promising soccer talent who had played with Bohemians and Cherry Orchard. At the end of the match on Friday he was carried on to the pitch on a stretcher. The Under-21s soccer manager, Mr Brian Kerr, presented him with a plaque.

The special match was in aid of the oncology unit in Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin.
