A nine-year-old boy has received broken leg after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Cork.

He was hit shortly after 5pm yesterday on the Old Youghal Road and taken to Cork University Hospital, the Garda said.

"His injuries although serious are not life threatening," a Garda spokesman said. The car failed to remain at the scene of the incident between Dillon's Cross and Gordon's Hill.

The Garda appealed for anybody in the area at the time  to contact them at Mayfield Garda Station on 021-4558510. They particularly want to speak to the driver of a beige or silver Nissan Primera (2002 model or later) or anyone who saw this car in the area.
