You need something to get you out of the house for an evening, but balk at golf with its footling around and ghastly sweaters? For a ride on the wild side, try roaring around the rugged foothills of Mount Leinster in a cross between a motorbike and a 4x4 jeep.

No V-neck sweater required, just a pair of long trousers, strong shoes, a sense of adventure, an hour and £20 to spare.

One element it shares with golf in this case is that the location is as much an attraction as the activity itself.

In the gleaming Barrow valley in south Carlow, up a mountain trail laced with stone walls, wild flowers and woodlands, farmers Michael and Kathryn Moloney have given their verdict on farming by turning some of their hilly land to an enterprise its steep hills and hollows might have been made for.

"I've been married here for nine years," says Kathryn, "and kept hearing that farming was going to go, but I never believed it till last year. With quotas and restrictions of all sorts, there's really nowhere for it to go."

So now they have a company which they have christened Country Quads, and so far their act of faith has cost them £60,000 (of which they'll recoup £20,000).

The appeal of the Honda Fourtrax 250cc, five-speed quad is that it can be driven by someone who has never even ridden a bicycle. You simply turn up and get instruction and a helmet. Then you're free to roar away, slipping and sliding and - in the glorious event that it's wet and mucky - spinning the wheels in dips and rises, through the hills and wooded paths and added-value obstacles designed to make the course more challenging.

There are eight quads on site, and the Moloneys reckon groups of six work best around the one-hour course. The lower age limit is 16, although there are plans to get machines for 10- to 16-year-olds.

Showers and toilets are already in place, and Kathryn is also considering a cafe and barbecue facilities to appeal to the corporate sector.

Tinnecarrig is 30 minutes from Kilkenny or Carlow town and 20 minutes from Enniscorthy. Doubtless other farmers with hilly land will be keenly monitoring developments.
