Gardaí are to send some bones recovered during a Garda excavation of a house in east Cork to medical experts in University College Cork today to see if they are human.

Gardaí from Midleton and Youghal carried out a planned search of a house in the Killeagh area yesterday after receiving information that the body of an infant may be buried under the floor of the dwelling.

Detectives equipped with kango hammers and other digging equipment spent several hours yesterday breaking through the concrete floor in part of the house before recovering a small number of bones.

According to Garda sources, the house is currently occupied but it had been derelict for a period of 30 years. It is believed that the information received suggested that the body of an infant may have been buried there during this time.

An informed source said that while some bones had been recovered, it did not appear on initial examination of them that they were human.

Gardaí are hoping that medical experts at University College Cork will be able to confirm their origin.
