Athens - Local anger over plans by a Canadian company to exploit a gold mine in north-east Greece appeared yesterday to lie behind the latest terror attack in the Greek capital. An organisation calling itself the "Urban Guerrilla Combat Movement" claimed responsibility for planting an explosive device which exploded late on Wednesday outside the private office of the Industry and Development Minister, Mr Vasso Papandreou.

A bomb disposal expert was injured when the device went off as he tried to disarm it. The little-known guerilla movement called a private radio station in Athens to say that it had targeted Mr Papandreou to protest against the activities of the Canadian gold-mining firm, TVX Gold.

TVX Gold won a licence in 1995 to extract an estimated 18 tonnes of gold from two mines near Aristotle's native village, Olympiada, something that has sparked anger among local residents.
