The roadside bomb detonated near a mobile phone shop near a popular commercial area. At least five people were killed and 17 were wounded.

Less than an hour later, a parked car bomb exploded behind a police station in the al-Alwiya district, killing a police officer and wounding five police commandos and two civilians.

Six bodies, meanwhile, were found in the Tigris River near the city of Kut, 100 miles southeast of Baghdad. They were blindfolded, had signs of torture, and their hands and feet were tied, said Maamoun Ajil al-Rubai, an official with the hospital morgue where the bodies were taken.
