Boeing speeds up 30,000 job cuts

Boeing says its plans to cut 30,000 jobs will be mostly completed by the middle of next year.

Boeing says its plans to cut 30,000 jobs will be mostly completed by the middle of next year.

The company had previously said it would make about 20,000 job cuts by mid-2002, with another 10,000 by the end of next year.

But Boeing now says almost all of the job cuts will be completed by mid-year, to match a reduction in aircraft production rates.

About 12,000 workers have already received lay-off notices, and are expected to be out of work by December 14th.

Boeing announced the lay-offs on September 18th, citing a downturn in the aviation industry caused by the US terror attacks.

The lay-offs will account for about 30 per cent of the estimated 93,000 employees in the company's commercial aircraft operations.
