The body of a boy (14) has been recovered from the River Foyle in Co Donegal.

He was swept away when he became caught by the rising tide near St Johnston yesterday evening.

Malin Head Coast Guard said the boy, a local, appeared to have become trapped in a hole and was swept away by a strong current. Two other boys managed to escape.

An Irish Coast Guard helicopter from Strandhill, Co Sligo and a PSNI helicopter were involved in the search. Two inshore rescue vessels from Greencastle, a Foyle search and rescue boat and a local boat also took part.

Dozens of villagers scoured the banks of the river for a number of hours after the accident was reported at 5.45pm.

The boy's body was found several hours later.

The body is expected to be formally identified by gardaí today following a post mortem at Letterkenny General Hospital.
