A late goal from substitute Marcelo Delgado left Argentinian giants Boca Juniors on course to retain their Libertadores Cup crown.

Delgado pounced in the 79th minute to secure Boca a 1-0 away win over Mexico's Cruz Azul in the first leg of the final, ahead of the second leg in Buenos Aires next week.

In a match played at altitude, Boca gave a cagey performance against the Mexican champions, not wanting to over-exert themselves in front of a 114,000 crowd at the famous Azteca Stadium.

The first-leg victory means Boca will be favourites to retain the South American club crown next week, emulating their back-to-back triumphs of 1977 and 1978.
