Mr Blair, buoyed by huge opinion poll leads, cut short celebrations for his 48th birthday yesterday to return to Downing Street to finalise election strategy.

Final details of the Labour election manifesto will be decided at today's cabinet meeting and Mr Blair would probably formally announce the June 7th date tomorrow, authoritative sources said.

Mr Blair would then visit Buckingham Palace to dissolve parliament and launch a four-week campaign.
