Ballina is to have a third-level institute, planned for some time by the Catholic University of Mayo under the leadership of the Bishop of Killala, Dr Thomas Finnegan.
Phase one negotiations have been completed, including the acquisition of a building and a site, and confirmation of a curriculum for postgraduate students in theology, philosophy, catechetics, regional archaeology and community development.
Details will be announced at the International Newman conference and summer school in Ballina from July 30th to August 18th. Dr Finnegan paid tribute to the Kennedy Foundation, the main sponsor.
