Bail has been refused for a third time to a Limerick man charged with threatening to kill a woman just hours after his brother was murdered.

Paul Crawford (32) has been remanded in custody for a further two weeks.

Mr Crawford (32), O'Malley Park, Limerick, is charged with threatening to kill Elizabeth Sparling in O'Malley Park, on December 18th.

Mr Crawford is alleged to have made the threat just hours after his brother Noel (40) was shot dead outside his parents' home in O'Malley Park.

Limerick District Court heard yesterday that bail had already been refused twice in the case.

On the last occasion, bail was refused by Judge Tom O'Donnell despite evidence by Ms Sparling that she no longer feared Mr Crawford.

At the time, gardaí believed that Ms Sparling was attempting to withdraw her statement out of "fear and intimidation".

Addressing the court yesterday, defence solicitor Ted McCarthy asked that the charge against his client be dealt with expeditiously given that it is alleged to have taken place just hours after his brother died in tragic circumstances.

Insp Pat Conlon told the court that the State was still awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions in the matter.

Judge O'Donnell requested that Mr McCarthy's comments be noted and remanded Mr Crawford in custody until January 18th when he is due to appear before the same court again.
