Hundreds of Irish dancers gathered in Athy on Saturday evening in an attempt to break the world Riverdance record.

Athy's Barrow river bank was bustling as scores of children and adults turned out to join the Guinness Book of Records bid to form the longest chain of riverdancers along the river.

Hundreds of amateur dancers, some as young as two, kicked and bounded in the air for a few minutes as the Riverdance theme was belted out over loudspeakers.

Despite a lower than anticipated turnout, onlookers crammed along Athy's Cromabau Bridge for a view.

Upbeat about the inaugural event, John Lynch, who pioneered the novelty display as part of the Athy Water Festival, backed by the north Barrow branch of the Inland Waterways, said another attempt at breaking the record was likely in the future. The record was set at the Grand Canal in Vicarstown, Co Laois, in 2000, where more than 1,000 people took part. "It was great for the children and got them away from the Play Stations," he said.
