At least 16 people were killed when a minibus crashed on a highway in southwestern Nigeria, triggering a pile-up involving several vehicles.

They said 15 of the dead, mostly students, were travelling in the minibus when it crashed on Saturday on a busy highway between the city of Ibadan and the university town of Ife, north of Lagos. At least 14 people were injured.

A Nigerian Red Cross official said one of the dead and most of the injured were in three other vehicles whose drivers had stopped to help the bus casualties.

A truck loaded with flour bags lost control at high speed and rammed into the three vehicles, setting off a blaze, Red Cross ambulance driver Michael Jayeoba said.

He and 30 other Red Cross officials arrived on the scene by chance as they travelled to Lagos.

Nigeria's road network, extensive but in poor repair, regularly sees devastating crashes which police blame largely on unqualified drivers and speeding.

According to official figures, close to 8,000 people died in nearly 13,000 recorded accidents on Nigerian roads last year.
