Arsenal are to ask FIFA to back their plea for France to be fair to top European clubs in choosing their team for a friendly against Australia in Melbourne on November 11th.

The Gunners face handing over four Highbury stars - Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Sylvain Wiltord and Robert Pires - for the long-haul trip.

The club fear they will return tired, jaded and possibly injured for their next game at Tottenham six days later.

Arsenal's vice-chairman David Dein has written to 12 other top clubs who have French internationals on their books - including Manchester United, Chelsea, Fulham and Roma - seeking their support in the plea to the world governing body.

Dean said: "It is time for some common sense. Enough is enough. At the moment we are obliged to send all the players France want, but we need to discuss this matter.

"France have just come back from Chile and you could see in our game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday that all the French players were really tired," he said.

"We have a situation where clubs are paying huge sums of money [in wages] but are losing the players to another organisation. There is a chance they will be injured and, at least, coming back feeling flat and tired".

France coach Roger Lemerre has set out a definite policy of playing long-haul away games in preparation for his squad's World Cup defence in Japan and South Korea next summer.

The match in Australia is their last away fixture before the 2002 finals.
