The Defence Forces has confirmed an inquiry is taking place into allegations by an Army recruit of bullying at a barracks in Dublin.

A spokesman told ireland.comthat allegations were made "a number of weeks ago" by an individual in training at McKee barracks. He could not give any further information about the person who made the allegations, he said.

It is understood the recruit claimed he was ordered by superiors to eat food off the floor and that he was locked inside a locker. He also claims to have had some property stolen.

Military Police have begun an investigation into the claims, the spokesman said.

Around 40 members of a platoon of army recruits have been interviewed as part of the inquiry, but the spokesman emphasised that this did not imply that those individuals who were interviewed were responsible for any of the alleged bullying.

He said the Defence Forces had "robust policies and procedures" with regard to allegations of harassment and bullying.

He added that the results of the inquiry are expected to be published within a few weeks.
