The International Decommissioning Commission is to consider a recommendation by the Irish Parliament Trust that a ship anchored in Carlingford Lough under a UN or Red Cross flag should be used for the collection of illegal arms.

The commission will shortly be making formal proposals to the British and Irish governments on decommissioning.

The head of the Commission, General John de Chastelain, in a letter to the Armagh-based peace research charity's director, Mr Paddy McGarvey, said that the proposal, which he termed "helpful and constructive", would be considered.

Mr McGarvey said: "We advised General de Chastelain to bring a ship under either UN or Red Cross flag into Carlingford Lough, the only shared sheltered seaway and easily serviced from Warrenpoint harbour. The ship would serve as a focus point for people anxious to get rid of arms caches."
