The youngest son of jailed Lord Archer was today banned from working in the City in London after a two-year investigation into share-dealing, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) said.

Mr James Archer (27) has been struck off the City watchdog's register after he was found to have breached its "high standards of market conduct" and "high standards of integrity and fair dealing".

Mr Archer, a former employee of Credit Suisse First Boston, was disciplined by a Securities and Futures Authority (SFA) disciplinary tribunal in proceedings stemming from an attempt to manipulate the Swedish OMX index in December 1998.

The SFA, a subsidiary of the FSA, issued a statement saying that Mr Archer and two colleagues had been removed from the register.

The move means Mr Archer, Mr David Crisanti and Mr Adrian Ezra are not able to trade for a City firm, but the expulsion does not mean a lifetime ban and they can apply to the FSA for reinstatement.

A spokeswoman today refused to comment on whether Mr Archer would appeal against the FSA's decision.
