Milan - Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, archbishop of Milan and an influential figure in the Roman Catholic church, has announced plans to retire to Jerusalem to devote himself to prayer and study.

The 75-year-old archbishop, considered a leading candidate to succeed Pope John Paul II, said in a pastoral letter he felt unable to continue his work as a cardinal due to his age and fatigue.
