A bronze Angel of Peace by sculptor Imogen Stewart was blessed at St Teresa's Carmelite Church on Dublin's Clarendon Street by the Archbishop of Dublin, Most Rev Diarmuid Martin, yesterday.

In a statement the community said that "as a consequence of the success of the peace process in Northern Ireland, and to celebrate a new era of peace for our country, the community decided to mark this event by placing an Angel of Peace on the bell tower at St Teresa's in the heart of the capital city".

They commissioned Imogen Stewart "whose gifts and achievements as sculptor are well known to us all to design and create an Angel of Peace."

Ms Stewart came to Ireland from Germany more than 50 years ago and has established a fine reputation within Irish fine art circles.

She has worked with the Carmelite community at Clarendon Street for many years on preserving artefacts in the church and sculpting a number of works.

"She was very enthusiastic about this new project and set about creating drawings and models of the angel.

"She completed a striking bronze angel which was installed in the bell tower before Christmas," the Carmelite statement noted.
